Chamber Music at its best
Since its foundation in 2001, the LEIPZIG PHILHARMONIA QUARTET has continued the rich German tradition of the string quartet. After winning First Prize at the Leipzig International Chamber Music Competition (2002), the Quartet decided to expanded its artistic experience by enrolling at the Leipzig Hochschule für Musik und Theater. During their time at the Hochschule, the ensemble was coached by members of the renowned Gewandhaus Orchestra. The ensemble also took part in several master classes, led by such masters as Prof. Wolfgang Weber and Prof. Dietmar Hallmann. They continue to work privately with the eminent artist and violin teacher Prof. Klaus Hertel.
The LEIPZIG PHILHARMONIA QUARTET consists of Holger Engelhardt and Thomas Krause (Violins), Christian Beyer (Viola) and Matthias Wilde (Violoncello). All four musicians have won prizes as soloists in several outstanding competitions. They also perform as soloists and ensemble members of the Philharmonic Orchestra Leipzig. For that reason, the ensemble choose the name “Leipzig Philharmonia Quartet”, to reflect their close relationship with the orchestra.
The Quartet’s repertoire is expansive, emphasizing works by many of the great German and European composers, as well as contemporary compositions. No stranger to the recording studio, the Quartet can often be found in the broadcasting studio of Radio Leipzig. The group cooperates with the Leipzig Fernseh television station. The ensemble performs regularly in Germany, as well as in Austria, Italy, Honduras, Nicaragua and Asia.
