The Leipzig Philharmonic Orchestra sets standard for excellence in musical performance at home and around the world. The Orchestra enriches and serves cultural life throughout the country and gains enormous public recognition. The dark and warm sound of the Orchestra, much praised today, has grown from the German tradition.
In 2000, the Orchestra was founded by committed music musicians. The Orchestra performs an extensive repertoire covering works from baroque to modern age. Every year it prepares diverse concert programmes which are performed first in Leipzig, and then on concert tours in the major concert halls of USA, Italy, China, Korea, India and Latin America. The Orchestra has performed at the Chicago Harris Theatre, Beijing Hall of the People, Shanghai Oriental Arts Center, Seoul Arts Center, Seoul Songnam Concert Hall, Mumbai National Center of the Performing Arts, Bangalore Chowdiah Concert Hall i.e. Radio and TV like ARD, ZDF, RAI, CCTV, Indian National TV i.e. have covered the orchestra activities.
The Orchestra regularly accompanies renowned and internationally recognized soloists of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, Staatskapelle Berlin and Gewandhausorchester Leipzig (Guy Braunstein, Lothar Strauß, Christian Funke, Giuliano Sommerhalder and Michael Barenboim). Also it regularly invites renowned guest conductors for festivals and gala concerts. The Orchestra is regularly invited in Italy at the Festival Internazionale della Cultura Bergamo as resident orchestra. The Orchestra is privileged to perform frequently with the renowned Indian violin maestro, Dr.L.Subramanian.
Highlights include events at the Leipzig Gewandhaus, Berlin Philharmonic, Berlin Konzerthaus, St. Thomas Church Leipzig, Bayreuth Festival and the Academy of Music and Drama „Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy“. But the Orchestra's involvement extends far beyond regular symphony concerts. In fact, the Leipzig Philharmonic devotes much of its energy and resources to ensuring that its presence is felt in schools, churches, and neighborhood music centers.
Some recent performances include the Christmas Oratorio by Bach, Messa di Requiem by Giuseppe Verdi, the oratorios The Creation by Joseph Haydn and The Messiah by Handel, The Flying Dutchman by Wagner at the Bayreuth Festival, year-end gala concerts and festival concerts presenting works by Beethoven (Symphony No. 7 and 9 at the Gewandhaus Leipzig), Shostakovitch (Symphonies No. 1, 5, 6, 9 and 10) and Richard Strauss (Death and Transfiguration).
The Leipzig Philharmonic Orchestra is one of the orchestras to operate its own chorus. The Philharmonic Youth Choir Leipzig has become recognized as one of the finest ensembles of its kind in Germany. Recent recordings are released by Sony Music.
